Responsible Volunteer Training. Empowering Women. Built on Local Realities.
At The Oazi Project, we envision a world where everyone feels seen and valued. Because we believe that when people feel seen and valued, they start to thrive.
That's why we organize a full-day interactive volunteer training, led by Tanzanian women. Here, we support international volunteers and interns in building the mindset needed to connect with a different culture and create genuine partnerships.
The Oazi Project grew out of a realization that experiencing a new culture and finding your place as a volunteer isn't a box you can check before departure. It is an ongoing process that requires an active mindset, guidance, and reflection while you are experiencing it.
When we checked this idea and sat down with leaders of Tanzanian projects, (ex-)volunteers and community members, the same conversations kept coming back.
We heard about the quiet exhaustion that comes when well-meaning intentions and expectations don't align with local realities. Many new volunteers unintentionally make the same mistakes while local hosts quietly absorb the impact out of hospitality.
Seeing this gap led to an unavoidable question:
How can volunteers become truly valuable?
Together, based on these collective experiences, we developed the Oazi Volunteer Training to close the gap between expectations and reality. If local communities are the ones hosting, then local voices must be the ones defining what respect and partnership look like.
Today, our mission centers on a traineeship program where Tanzanian women gain paid experience to design and lead these volunteer trainings. By centering the expertise of local leaders, we ensure that volunteers step into their journey with the right perspective, ready to embrace a process of learning, adaptation, and genuine connection.
We believe that truly meaningful volunteering doesn't start with trying to change a community. It starts with learning how to become a thoughtful, trusted partner to the people who are already leading the way.
Become the volunteer everyone truly values!
